Rock for Research is the brain child of Brian and Danielle Baker, owners of Bellport Brewing Company on Long Island NY. On June 6th 2006 their were blessed by their first child. Just a few short days after they found out that their child was diagnosed with Phenylketonuria (fen-ul-key-toe-NU-ree-uh), also called PKU.
As young new parents fear and love is all they knew. The support system was not great about this metabolic disorder and even the all so powerful internet did not have the right direction for them. Fast forward 12 years and we have a plethora of support and help from this expanding community.
PKU affects 1 in 15,000 newborns a year. Pharmaceutical companies have treatments to help with the disorder and there may even be a cure in the near future. This is where we can help.. For new parents of patients with PKU some of the best resources right now are PKU News and Howmuchphe.org among many. Sarah and the staff work tirelessly to get new and accurate information to all of their newsletter subscribers and give nutrient values for everyday foods. A strict diet is a crucial requirement to maintain health. Protein is the biggest value that concerns the patient. Too much and it does not get processed correctly and ferments as a toxic for the developing brain.
As a supporter of the PKU community, Brian and Danielle are constantly looking to help others via social media, email and even in person where they can. This first (of hopefully an annual event) is a fundraiser to provide proceeds to amazing communities like PKU News and Howmuchphe.org. This year local bands The_Burbs and Chris J. Connollywill open the concert for our headliner William Ryan Key (formally of Yellowcard). These bands have graciously offered to help raise funds for an amazing cause and help spread the word through their music. Join us for an amazing night of music, food and friends.
This show is 18 and over and all tickets (general admission, VIP and Meet & Greet) are available now at tickets.bellportbrewing.com.
